Saturday Overnight Open Thread (4/10/21)
— Ace Open Blog

The Saturday Night Joke

Hillary Clinton goes to a gifted-student primary school in New York to talk about the world. After her talk she offers question time.

One little boy puts up his hand. Hillary asks him what his name is.

"Kenneth," he says.

"And what is your question, Kenneth?" she asks.

"I have three questions," he says.

"First -- whatever happened in Benghazi?

"Second -- why would you run for president if you are not capable of handling two e-mail accounts?

"And, third -- whatever happened to the missing six billion dollars while you were Secretary of State?"

Just then the bell rings for recess. Hillary informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess.

When they resume Hillary says, "Okay, where were we? Oh, that's right, question time.

Who has a question?"

A different boy -- little Johnny -- puts his hand up.

Hillary points to him and asks him what his name is.

"Johnny," he says.

"And what is your question, Johnny?" she asks.

"I have five questions," he says.

"First -- whatever happened in Benghazi?

"Second -- why would you run for president if you are not capable of handling two e-mail accounts?

"Third -- whatever happened to the missing six billion dollars while you were Secretary of State?

"Fourth -- why did the recess bell go off 20 minutes early?

"And, fifth -- where's Kenneth?"

MEXICO CITY - It started with his mom's credit card, claimed Ismael Almada in March 2020, as he voluntarily spilled his guts to U.S. law enforcement officers during an interview in the Mexican city of Guadalajara. He'd originally used his mom's card to order weapons accessories and tactical gear off eBay for his security business that focused on anti-spyware and surveillance technology, before eventually moving to PayPal to make the trail of U.S. goods to Mexico a bit more clandestine.

A man who was stopped for driving on the wrong side of the road in Catalonia was found to have a dead body in the front passenger seat.

Police made the grim discovery after the 66-year-old suddenly turned around at the checkpoint between Spain and France.

Investigators believe the deceased, an 88-year-old man, had been dead for about three weeks.

They say the driver may have been taking him home to Switzerland.

The body, believed to be the driver's partner, had started to decompose. It was covered with a blanket and was wearing a seatbelt, reports Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.

An autopsy will be carried out on Friday to determine how he died, although investigators say there is no evidence of criminality, the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) tweeted.

Watching Mecum auction in Arizona.

I was watching the livestream earlier today, with captions on. Auto-captioning of an auctioneer works about as well as you'd expect (which is to say, not at all), to often hilarious effect. The phrase "bigger dick" made an appearance, although no actual dicks of any size were spotted.

vodka and cranberry juice with lime is called a "Cape Codder"  It is a good drink.  If you add in some triple sec, you get the infamous Cosmopolitan from a decade or so ago.

Anyone who laughs at someone drinking vodka and juice has their own view. But I know for a fact, not talking about you, but the real heavy drinkers mix it that way. You can put down a lot more     booze that way than anyone drinking a single malt with a drop of water. My point is, don't laugh. Sure it is a good drink. But watch out for the ones that mix it, often they are the guys that can put down a bottle or two. Not sure why I spoke this truth, but I know it is true..  A cocktail is great, and anyone who never does one is likely a light weight.   btw, I wish I were a lightweight. Oh the money to get back by only going for unsweet tea.

103   Prince Philip was a hoot, and something of a royal Archie Bunker. Look up some of the things he said that would send the Twitter generation screaming into their safe spaces.
Two of my favorites: In Australia, he was meeting with some Aborigine leaders. He asked them if they still chucked spears at each other. Meeting with some African king or president or something wearing some traditional white robe get-up, Philip asked him if he was getting ready for bed.
And other hilarious one. Philip was meeting with a bunch of celebrities (the modern royalty) and met with actress Cate Blanchett. Now, Philip came from the old school aristocracy that considered actors very low class, very low brow. Ruffians, really. He asked Cate for help in hooking up a DVD player someone had given him, figuring she would know, since she was in that business.

104 When you consider a senior dog this has to be your mindset...  This isn't for me..it's for them.  You give them their best life until they cross the Rainbow Bridge.  You give them all you can knowing any day can be their last.  It's tough but you absolutely must think this way or your heart will be torn into pieces every damn time. I'm not saying your heart won't break.. mine has been broken many times but it's worth it knowing their final days were perhaps their best because YOU were there for them.

they do?  my guess is they have to  store fat for leaner times when the whale catching is not so great. My understanding is Eskimos and many other peoples on this earth have less heart disease because their lifestyle is less stressful. Not saying they don't bust their ass. Do the "Royals" have other such as the late Prince Phillips?  Perhaps one similar to a pre-tart Harry, when he was a warrior, hunter, shooter and all around raconteur.  ESPECIALLY if he'd come equipped with the speed and wit of a Phillip.

Find that "Royal", and let's see to it that a properly engraved, printed and gilt invitation to Join the Royal Ewokian Order of the Over Night Thread is duly delivered upon a silver charger, as is the way of their people.

Lacking that, then send the invite to Donald Trump Jr.  He'd have a blast here, I think.

179 you see the same with people trying to recreate the diet of Okinawa, or the diet of Crete, AKA, The Medditerranean Diet. The reality is you can't replicate those worlds in Indiana, so stop trying. Also, people convince themselves that the "Med Diet" means wine and olive oil. The reality is they eat ten times as many veggies as we do. They also live a more sedate life. you are not going to replicate that easily.

and if you think I am bashing America, you are wrong. We bitch constantly about being overweight and out of shape. I think  we all know that is the stereotype. But the American life expectance is only going up, and has been for a long, long time.

187 Well, I mean I'm joking about "the one".

She did profess her love after the first date, introduce me to her kids in the second date, tell me about her anxiety and the script she takes for it, tell me about her mental health crisis in 2020 when she went to the psych ward and she did ask me to drink shroom tea with her, as she just ordered some pot from her 'dispensary' in Colorado and thought she might add some shrooms to the order.

195    Prince Philip's mouth did manage to get him in deep doo-doo with the Queen at least once. They were meeting with some other Euro royals, and they're all cousins with each other somehow. Anyway, one gal who was QEII's second cousin remarked to Philip about smooth and lovely the Queen's skin was.
Philip replied, "Oh yes, and it's like that all over."
Her Majesty overheard that, and she was not amused. Not amused at all. Philip was in the royal doghouse for a while after that.
Such might explain another funny incident that came out very recently. It was after Philip and Liz were married but before she was queen. They'd been married for a little while and were on tour in Australia. They stayed overnight at some camp-like resort thing in a little bungalow. The Aussies had guards all around.
One guard, and he kept this quiet for decades heard raised voices coming from the bungalow, and then saw the front door fly open and Philip come running out. Princess Elizabeth's shoe flew out right after him.

I was in London for an extented stay in the year 2000. I am not talking weeks, i am talking months. It wasn't my first time there, and it wasn't my last, but it was the only time i can say I actually lived there. There was an up an coming chef at the time. You could go to his restaurant at lunch and chow down for 20 pounds. I planned to do it, I followed the opportunity, but it never happened. That chef's name was Gordon Ramsay.

I have had some weird meals in London. I remember at on time I was all alone there are Thanksgiving. The bartender gave me a free bag of chips  with turkey and stuffing  flavor. It was a small gesture, but I still recall it to this day.  I could mention many more experiences, even more on Thanksgiving in London.. Looking back, I had more kindnesses put upon me in London than any other place. There is one exception, there is one other country that treated me even  better as a lone traveler. That city was Paris. And that country was France. I might think about those times and mention them here one day. But i will never forget London.  There were so many times someone reached out to me in kindness. I probably can't count them all, but to be honest, you never forget the kindness of strangers.

i wish that was a comment that could be seen and herd.  There is some truth to it. I have spent a lot of time over there and the truth is cooking was never a big deal on the margins. They messed up the basic stuff, but the could crush the big stuff. Even in the 90s, they loved food tv, or food porn if you will. Some of the best tv chefs were Brits during that time. And the Brits loved food porn. No doubt still the average joint was pretty damn bad.

I think it was Prince Charles who deemed Indian curries as the true national dish of England. He was not wrong about that, most citizens would have agreed at the time. They also had kick ass Chinese food if you knew where to look. And  yes, there was also great fish and chips. But the thing is, you had to do your research For every great chipper, there were 50 crappy joints that no local would ever go to. That is not UK specific, you will see the same thing in Italy, particularly near tourist enclaves.

Looking up some stuff about Prince Philip's "British women can't cook" "gaffe" -- and he got some heat for that, it turns out he may be on to something. At least now. He said that a while ago, but some survey in 2011 found that Brit womyms were in a pretty sorry state of cooking skill.
The average Brit woman knew how to cook only 7 basic dishes from scratch.  Five percent couldn't even boil an egg, and fully 50% said their husbands were better cooks than they were.
Now do that same survey in America. I imagine you'd get similar results. Feminism has made woman resent cooking, I think.

if so they were foolish and they only ostracized their beaus. The reality is everyone values someone who can cook. ninety percent of the top 1000 chefs are men. At least that was true a decade ago. Sure women should cook, who wouldn't want to make great things for someone they love and be appreciated for it?  Anyone against that, would be a first strike and your out person for me.

it is a time and place thing. Think of that time, Texas voted for Carter and Virginia voted Repub..  You can't go back because everything is different now.   Today, Virginia would vote for Idi Amin. over Ted Cruz.

272 As a historian (well recently fired as of Mon), Feel really compelled to comment on Prince Philip's death.
A huge historical connection to the lives we are living today has just passed. He was the grt nephew of Alexandra, Empress of Russia, he said they murdered my family. Connections to a whole different time and age is gone..
Personally, he was not enthused about living an extremely long life, remarking in a 2000 interview (when he was 79) that he could not "imagine anything worse" and had "no desire whatsoever" to become a centenarian, saying "bits of me are falling off already"

hang in there Farmer. I wish I could say more but I  don't have the words AFAIK, this country is in a weird stage where it hates  history The Left prides itself on not knowing history.  Some of the leaders know it, that is why they want to squash it.   This country is rotting. A blind man could see it.

Anyway. Thank God for eBay. Turns out I still need some stuff for the Windows machine. But I bought it refurbed and it came a bit beat up, so it doesn't bother me to get cheap used stuff there for that machine.

OTOH I'll probably end up bankrupting myself for the new PC I want to build...

Farmer, you've got a point there with the passing of Phillip.  It's not just a matter of his age or era though. But those, combined with his lineage and position, well.. damn few would have had the view, the perspective or the context of the times he saw as the decades rolled on.

Men such as him, and for all of his flaws, Mountbatten, made England the Proud Lion of Empire, even through her slow 20th Century decline.  Which sadly now, accelerates.  Charles ain't a pimple on the ass of men such as those.  And while Harry had the chance at greatness, he gave it all up for the allure of high-mileage pussy.

The apple doesn't fall far from the stablehand's tree.

276   At the risk of making you all sick, I must indeed reiterate that Miley is one hell of a cook. I hit the jackpot. My mother was quite impressed with Miley's cooking, comparing her to my great-aunt Lillian. I explained to Miley that that was high praise indeed.
Aunt Lillian was known as the best cook on the maternal side of the family, and she was the one who whipped up various family get-together meals. She was capable of putting together a feast for 15 people with very little notice.  I remember some of her dinners as a little boy. She was getting on up in years then. Her daughter and granddaughter-in-law did most of the heavy lifting the, but Aunt Lillian was in charge and directed them. I remember no one was allowed in the kitchen, save those authorized by Aunt Lillian when those big dinners were being cooked.
One of my great-uncles, one of Aunt Lillian's brothers got in the doghouse with his own wife one time. His wife suggested she'd host some get-together and do the cooking. He said, no, let Lillian do it. That was the wrong thing to say.
Anyway, Miley is in Aunt Lillian's league. And that's world class.

Publius.  My late Mom, her older sister Edith, and Edith's daughter Glenna, (who I grew up calling Aunt Glenna, due to age things), completely took over the kitchen du jour, at family gatherings.

One did not step foot therein, uninvited.

The food that emerged from therein though, was as from the Gods themselves.  Every dish equally hot, fresh, not soggy, ready to eat.  Four burner stove, one oven, umpteen or more dishes.  Not a cold bit to be found, and all this, well before the microwave era.

Even if there WAS math on this blog, this would crash the computer.  No way around it, it'd stack-failure to the root, and just blink, stupidly.

Kinda like me on a Monday morning.

281    And that reminds of a funny family lore story about Aunt Lillian. Her husband was known as Uncle L.E, and I ashamed to say I don't even remember what L.E. stood for.  Uncle L.E. had passed on before I was aware of anything, probably before I was born.
Anyway, one week Aunt Lillian had to go somewhere and leave Uncle L.E. to his own devices to fend for himself. Aunt Lillian had a cat, and Uncle L.E. wasn't sure what to feed him. He called Aunt Lillian and it turned out he couldn't find the cat food or they were out. Aunt Lillian carefully explained to him to go to the grocery store and get a bag of cat food.  Uncle L.E didn't know much about grocery stores.
Later he called Aunt Lillian again, and said he'd gotten a bag of cat food, but the cat would eat it.
Long story short, but Uncle L.E. had gone down the aisle and picked up a bag of something with a picture of a cat on it. It was cat litter, not cat food.

Yes, I get all that Jim.

I'm just pointing out the history we are losing w/ the death of a 99 yo Greek/Danish prince b 1921.

It is mind boggling to me, a connection w/ a long lost world. Philip's grandfather was born in 1845 and at the age of 17 was elected king of Greece. A different age.
